Renewable energy is an increasingly important asset for rural communities and areas with limited transmission and distribution infrastructure. Adding energy storage to an island's existing electrical infrastructure aids in maintaining a stable grid and allows for increased penetration of renewable energy assets. A properly sized energy storage system is capable of smoothing out the variability of renewable power generation and reduces the reliance on diesel fuel by enabling renewables to be used for more hours of the day. Energy storage also enables diesel generators to run more efficiently and less often, thereby lowering the associated operating costs.
Multi-unit residential buildings can reduce overall energy costs by incorporating energy storage and PV solar. During the night when tariffs are lower and/or during the day from any excess PV solar production, a battery system can store less expensive energy for later use. This stored energy can then be shifted to periods of the day when energy needed to power a building is more expensive, such as daytime cooling and peak-tariff periods.
Operating a battery system to provide load-shifting services will typically flatten out a building’s energy demand, resulting in a reduction in overall energy costs. Additionally, storage enables the operation of highly reliable and secure power source for a building's most critical loads.
As a large power consumer, fluctuations in energy pricing and rising demand charges can have a significant impact on a company's bottom line. To better control energy costs, commercial and industrial clients can flatten their load profile by utilizing energy storage to charge during off-peak times and discharge during a facility’s peak. By shifting when a facility pulls power from the grid, demand charges can be reduced thereby avoiding costly peak rates. The resulting electricity bill savings can reach 30% on average.
Energy storage also insulates facilities from power outages, protecting against potential revenue losses and damaged equipment. In the event of a blackout, a facility’s critical energy needs can be met with on-site energy storage, ensuring continuous operation and reducing negative impacts on production, equipment, and revenue.
